There’s something powerful that happens when learning extends beyond the traditional classroom - and at Wildcrest, we see it every day.

Wildcrest Academy is one of the unique opportunities we offer in South Kitsap. Students are learning through experience as their classroom is expanded to the natural environment around us. This outdoor expeditionary learning experience is creating a connection between students and the environment. Through this, we are creating spaces where students believe in themselves and what they are learning. 

On April 1st, our School Board will hold a study session focused on Wildcrest. We’ll hear directly from students and staff about their experiences, the impact of this model, and the opportunities ahead. It’s always powerful when our students share their voice and we invite you to join us at 5:30pm at the Administration Office to be part of a meaningful conversation about learning in South Kitsap.

Both our Facilities Steering Committee and Finance Advisory Committee have met monthly since January and continue to provide thoughtful feedback as we engage in helping move our district forward towards the future. The community members are playing an important role in helping us stay aligned to our long-term vision through transparency and honest engagement.

The Finance Advisory Committee has been focused on understanding current budget realities and how they relate to forecasting future budget challenges. Their input as they learn together helps us in maintaining transparency and responsibility with school district finances.

The Facilities Steering Committee is reviewing our current status and helping to identify priorities that will end up on the upcoming Capital Projects Levy in November. These committee members are providing the district with an important lens to ensure that our district and community are aligned.

At our March 4 School Board meeting, our School Board Members spent time discussing the important work happening across the South Kitsap School District to strengthen reading instruction for all students. From our classrooms to our professional learning communities, there is a clear and intentional effort underway to ensure every student is building the skills they need to read, learn, and succeed.

To support this work, our Board members committed to reading a selected book every month and sharing their reflections with our community at monthly board meetings. This models the importance of reading, reinforces our shared focus on literacy, and helps connect the work happening in our classrooms to our broader community.

I am grateful that we have a School Board that leads with purpose, models the SK Way, and supports the incredible work our staff is doing every day to help our students grow as readers, thinkers, and learners.
